Dental Crowns

When teeth become too worn or damaged to be repaired with bonding and fillings, our dentists may recommend that they be covered with dental crowns at our Shreveport dental practice. Dental crowns, popularly known as caps, fit over the top of a worn or damaged tooth, restoring both the function and the cosmetic appearance of the tooth.

In the past, patients had to wait for dental crowns to be produced at a lab, necessitating the use of a temporary crown for a week or more while they waited. Today at Cormier Family Dentistry, our advanced dental technology allows us to craft crowns while our patients wait. The CEREC in-office milling system is able to produce fully customized, high-quality ceramic same-day restorations, saving our patients time and money. Previously patients wore temporary crowns to protect the tooth while the permanent cap was crafted from a mold. CEREC eliminates this awkward and painful downtime. We are able to take a digital image of the affected tooth and create an effective ceramic cap in office in less than a half-hour.

The beauty of the CEREC machine is that you don’t have to sacrifice quality for convenience. We invite you to learn more about the benefits of same-day dental crowns at our Shreveport practice, serving Bossier City and surrounding areas, by contacting Cormier Family Dentistry today.

Do I need a dental crown?

Our dentists will need to evaluate the condition of your teeth as well as your overall oral health to determine whether a dental crown is the appropriate treatment for you. We generally implement dental crowns to support weak and broken teeth; however, caps may be used as a purely cosmetic dentistry treatment as well. Crowns may be used to cover a dental implant. anchor a dental bridge, rebuild the tooth after root canal therapy, adjust or maintain a patient’s bite, or support teeth with a lot of fillings.

What kinds of crowns are there?

We strongly recommend ceramic crowns created in office using our CEREC. In addition to the immediate treatment provided, the ceramic crowns offer the perfect combination of durability as cosmetic appeal. Other types of crowns such as all-metal crowns offer durability but are cosmetically unappealing especially when applied to the most visible front facing teeth.

What is the dental crown procedure like?

Prior to the procedure, a digital model of your mouth and tooth will be created–from this model a ceramic dental crown designed specifically for you with be milled using our CEREC system. Local anesthetic will be applied to the gums to numb the area. Your tooth will be reshaped using a high-speed dental drill. Depending on the integrity of your tooth you may require additional filling to help the cap fit, or the dentist may need to reshape your teeth into a peg shaped designed to anchor the crown to your jaw. The remaining tooth will be cleaned thoroughly and prepared with adhesive. Once your tooth is adequately prepared, the crown will be placed.

What is life like with a dental crown?

Dental crowns afford all of the benefits of a natural tooth; however, they also require the same amount of care. Regular tooth brushing and flossing, as well as regular check-ups at the dentist are vital to help the crown and the surrounding teeth and tissue remain healthy. Dental crowns can last from five to 15 years depending on wear and personal care. If you experience abnormal sensitivity or notice changes to your bite or looseness in the cap, contact our office promptly for evaluation and check-up.
