FAQ

for Cormier Family Dentistry Patients in Shreveport

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Recession of the gum line exposes underlying dentin–a sensitive nerve that responds to heat and cold. Sensitivity may be managed effectively with specialty toothpastes or gels. Some dental procedures may also relieve the symptoms.

What should I do to prevent gum disease and tooth decay?

Good oral hygiene is the best way to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Regular tooth brushing and conscientious flossing every day help minimize the risk factors for gingivitis and tooth decay. We are happy to demonstrate proper at home care during your regular cleaning at our Shreveport office.

What is Gingivitis?

When bacteria are not removed with effective oral hygiene they surround the teeth. Sometimes it enters the gums, causing them to become irritated and may even cause bleeding. Regular cleanings help prevent and treat this condition–and proper daily oral care will help keep gingivitis in check.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the progression of gum disease. Irritated gums give way to bad breath, recession of the gums, sensitivity, abscesses, pain, and eventually tooth loss.

How Do You Treat Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease requires immediate attention. Periodontal disease patients receive vital periodontal cleanings, root planing & scaling at our Shreveport office. Treatment may also include laser therapy and local antibiotics. In extreme cases, periodontal surgery may be necessary.

What is the Difference Between a White and Silver Filling?

Silver and gold fillings are made of a strong metal amalgam. While these were the industry standard for years because of their durability, advances in restoration technology make white fillings made of composite that matches natural tooth color the preferred method of restoration.

How Can I Improve My Smile?

We offer many ways to give your smile a makeover. These include tooth whitening, tooth colored bonding, veneers, and crowns. Each of these procedures helps to increase the symmetry and coloration of your smile to restore confidence and beauty.

What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth whitening uses bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide to lighten teeth coloration and remove stains. Tooth whitening is a cost effective and safe procedure to creat beautiful, healthy smiles. We recommend in office whitening systems like GLO! as dentist supervision ensure safety and results.

What is Bonding?

Bonding may be used to fill in gaps between teeth and improve the coloration of a tooth through the application of a tooth colored bond.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are thin sheets that fit and bonded on the front of the natural teeth to improve the color, shape, and size of a patient’s teeth.

What are Crowns?

Crowns are ceramic caps that cover the tooth. They may be used to replace damaged teeth or simply for cosmetic reasons.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant provides a new titanium root when a tooth has been removed. The root is then capped with a realistic looking crown to replace the aesthetic appearance as well as the function of the tooth.
